21-cm foregrounds and polarization leakage: cleaning and mitigation strategies

چکیده

ABSTRACT The success of H i intensity mapping is largely dependent on how well 21-cm foreground contamination can be controlled. In order to progress our understanding further, we present a range simulated data from two different ∼3000 deg2 sky regions, with varying effects polarization leakage. Combining these cosmological simulations creates test cases that require treatments. This allows us conduct the most generalized study date into foregrounds and their cleaning techniques for post-reionization era. We first provide pedagogical review commonly used blind removal [principal component analysis (PCA)/singular value decomposition (SVD), fast independent (FASTICA), morphological (GMCA)]. also trial non-blind parametric fitting technique discuss potential hybridization methods. highlight similarities differences in finding methods produce near equivalent results, explain fundamental reasons this. Our results demonstrate polarized residuals should generally subdominant small scales ($k\gtrsim 0.1\, h\, \text{Mpc}^{-1}$). However, larger scales, are more case dependent. some cases, aggressive cleans severely damp power but still leave dominant residuals. find changing fraction has little impact within realistic (0.5–2 per cent); however, higher level Faraday rotation does cleaning. gain cross-correlations optical galaxy surveys, where extreme levels residual circumvented. contribute errors optimal balance between overcleaning undercleaning.

How well can we measure and understand foregrounds with 21 cm experiments?

Before it becomes a sensitive probe of the Epoch of Reionization, the Dark Ages, and fundamental physics, 21 cm tomography must successfully contend with the issue of foreground contamination. Broadband foreground sources are expected to be roughly four orders of magnitude larger than any cosmological signals, so precise foreground models will be necessary. Such foreground models often contain ...

Foregrounds for redshifted 21 cm studies of reionization : GMRT 153 MHz observations

Foreground subtraction is the biggest challenge for future redshifted 21 cm observations to probe reionization. We use a short GMRT observation at 153MHz to characterize the statistical properties of the background radiation across ∼ 1◦ to sub-arcminutes angular scales, and across a frequency band of 5MHz with 62.5 kHz resolution. The statistic we use is the visibility correlation function, or ...

Cosmic 21 cm delensing of microwave background polarization and the minimum detectable energy scale of inflation.

We propose a new method for removing gravitational lensing from maps of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization anisotropies. Using observations of anisotropies or structures in the cosmic 21 cm radiation, emitted or absorbed by neutral hydrogen atoms at redshifts 10 to 200, the CMB can be delensed. We find this method could allow CMB experiments to have increased sensitivity to a backgr...
